Protect yourself and your business with self-employed health insurance

Self-employed sickness insurance

Being self-employed comes with a lot of freedom. You’re your own boss, so can decide when and where you work. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

Unlike when you’re an employee at a company, it’s likely that you don’t get any statutory sick pay when you’re off work due to sickness when you’re self employed1. With no income while you’re not able to work, this can add to the worry that comes with being unwell.

Our self- employed sickness insurance aims to get you back to work as quickly as possible by giving you prompt access to diagnosis and eligible treatment in a private hospital. You could cut down on waiting list times and see a specialist quickly, minimising the amount of time that you need to spend away from work. This also comes with the added benefit that your appointment can be at a time and place that suits you, whether that be in the evening or at the weekend. This gives you the flexibility to plan your medical appointments around your life and your work.

Get back to work quickly

Taking time off work because of sickness can not only have financial implications due to a loss of pay, but it can also put relationships with clients at risk if you aren’t able to fulfil contracts.

Sometimes medical appointments can be inconvenient when they’re during working hours, or at locations that aren’t convenient for you to get to.

With our self-employed sickness insurance, you’ll be more in control of your medical appointments. Our Doctor@Hand service (provided by Doctor Care Anywhere and available with our Extended Cover option) lets you speak to a GP by video or by phone at a time that suits you. Whether that’s in the middle of the night or at the weekend, you can have a 20 minute appointment with a GP whenever and wherever is most convenient for you*.

If your GP recommends that you see a specialist, our Fast Track Appointments team will find you an appointment with a consultant-level expert at a time and place that suits your schedule so you can minimise the amount of time that you’re not at work.

And if you have to spend time in hospital, you’ll have access to an approved list of private hospitals. As well as being able to choose which hospital you’ll be treated at, you’ll usually get your own private room, TV and Wi-Fi as well as free parking for you and your visitors so your stay will be as comfortable as possible.

Peace of mind

It can be worrying when you aren’t feeling your best. You might have lots of niggling health-related questions or concerns that keep you awake at night, or that you worry about during the working day.

With our sickness insurance for the self-employed, you’ll have access to our 24/7 Health at Hand telephone service. Whether you’ve got questions about a diagnosis, worries about a prescription or pregnancy related queries – our Health at Hand team of midwives, pharmacists, counsellors and nurses is just a phone call away**.

Cover to suit you

Our self-employed sickness insurance comes with a range of options for you to choose from so you can tailor your plan to best suit your needs. There are also cost saving options available, so it might be more affordable than you think.

Cost saving options include:

  • Pay up front – you could save 5% by paying for your subscription yearly instead of monthly.
  • Six week option – you could save up to 23% by choosing this option. With the six week option, if you can get eligible treatment on the NHS within six weeks of when it should take place, you’ll be treated on the NHS. If you need to wait more than six weeks, you’ll go private straight away.
  • Choose an excess – you could save on your subscription by choosing an excess of £100, £250 or £500.
