The spider veins can be caused by the backup of the blood flow in the vein, as well hormonal changes and injuries. Spider veins are not considered a serious health problem. However, they can cause uncomfortable feelings in the legs and some aches as you experience as well.
Considering that the pain is now in your upper leg as well, we would suggest to see your doctor again. They can examine you and request further investigations such an ultrasound to check the vein circulation in your legs.
