I am currently getting pain just above my right heel in the achilles area, if i run for more than ten minutes the area swells up and is tender to the touch as i am planning on uping my fitness levels to take on a half marathon i would like to get to the bottom of the problem ASAP, I have been attending a gym for 18 months now and have had this problem for the last 6 months even with rest as soon as i run the problem occurs time and again please help?
It sounds like you are an active person and injuries caused by a repetitive strain or force on a joint are common in those who do a lot of sports. This tends to be referred to as ‘overuse’ of the joint and can impact upon any of the tissues in the limb.
In the Achilles area there is a large tendon known as the ‘Achilles tendon’, and a repetitive strain on this structure may lead to tendonitis - inflammation of the tendon. It is possible that this may be the cause of your symptoms; however, you will need to see your GP for examination and diagnosis.
Many injuries caused by repetitive strains will often be treated in the same way, with a combination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ice packs to reduce inflammation, and most importantly, rest.
