Even when life is busy, it’s surprising how much of it you can spend sitting down, either at a desk, in front of the TV, or with a tablet on your lap. In fact, more than 40% of us spend more than four hours a day sitting in the same place without a break. A sedentary lifestyle can also lead you into bad eating and drinking habits and set a bad example if you have children. Here are some steps you can take to break those habits and reduce your health risks:
Move it at work: make sure to move every 30 minutes. If you sit at a desk, try standing for a few minutes at a time. Go for a walk at lunchtime and take the stairs instead of the lift.
Play with the kids: finding time to do things they want to do, like running round the garden can be really good for your health too.
Do something different: go bowling with friends instead of down the pub and walk or cycle to meet them instead of taking the car.
Stop smoking: if you smoke, think about quitting now. You’ll see real health benefits from day one and you could add years to your life.
