The Answer

If you have a problem with your heart rhythm (either too fast, too slow or the heartbeats have become irregular) you may need a pacemaker. It is a small device that is put inside the chest. It has wires that can send the heart the correct electrical impulses to control the heartbeat.

Once the heart is beating correctly with the pacemaker controlling it, the heart can pump blood around the body more efficiently. In some people, a pacemaker can be lifesaving.
