I am 44 years of age and was begining to wonder if I have diabetes. I have recently been wanting to have a wee several times a night. I do not smoke or drink, but drink plenty of water during the day. But also cant quench my thirst i'm not over weight and in good health and have an active job. Can you give me some advice on what to do?

The Answer

It is certainly possible that you may have developed diabetes. I wonder if you are overweight, because type 2 diabetes is more common if you are. However, it can sometimes develop in those who are normal weight too.

You need to make an appointment to see the doctor as soon as possible. A urine test will be able to tell if there is excess sugar in your system, and a blood test will be able to confirm the diagnosis. If you eat lots of sweet foods such as chocolates, sweets and cakes, you must cut these out today and it may help the thirst.

If diabetes is the reason for your symptoms, do try not to panic. If you are very sensible about your health and your diet, you will be able to control it (often with medication) and hopefully stay well and healthy for many years to come.
