Ache in my big toe joint

Hi, I have had an ache in my big toe joint for a few months now. The pain varies - sometimes a dull ache but then sometimes more of a shooting pain. Any ideas?

The answer

As you are probably aware there are many reasons why you may be getting pain in your big toe joint ranging from poorly fitting shoes to inflamed joints.  It is important to ascertain when and where the pain changes or occurs.  For example; does it change after exercise/standing? Is it worse in the morning or evening?  Is it swollen or red sometimes/all the time?  This will give clues to your general practitioner when investigating the problem.  Therefore please consult with your GP about the problem who can give you a holistic review of your concern.
