I got a pain right below the front of my shoulder...

Hi! I just need some advice. I'm a volleyball player and as I was serving i felt something wrong with my arm. I got a pain right below the front of my shoulder that went on for another inch or two. It's been around 3 days since then and whenever I serve (overhand) my arm hurts. I've also been feeling a popping, and cracking sensation in my shoulder area. It doesn't hurt when I'm resting it, but it does feel uncomfortable as I feel that sensation. I have my next volleyball tournament in 3 weeks, will it be better by then? Thanks.

The answer

There are a number of reasons why you might be experiencing shoulder pain. There are things you can do yourself to manage shoulder pain, including using painkillers such as Ibuprofen, or ice packs to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Avoiding activities that may aggravate your symptoms will also help. Depending on the cause of your shoulder pain, you may need further treatment, such as physiotherapy, corticosteroid injection or even surgery in some cases.

Because your shoulder pain is the result of an injury we recommend you make an appointment with your GP as a correct diagnosis will ensure you receive the right treatment and hopefully a full and speedy recovery for your next tournament.
