Can caffeine cause weight loss?
It has previously been claimed that caffeine among other products including green tea, spices and energy drinks can speed up an individual’s metabolism hence closely linked with weight loss however, little scientific evidence to back these claims has deemed them relatively unsubstantial as their possible effect on an individual’s metabolism has been known to be marginal in most cases and each individual will respond differently to each product depending on factors e.g. age, lifestyle.
Although research regarding the link between caffeine and weight loss isn't definitive, there are some theories about possible correlation between caffeine and weight:
- Appetite suppression. It may reduce your desire to eat for a short period of time, however little evidence to show that long-term intake aids a reduction in weight.
- Calorie burning. It may stimulate thermogenesis : generation of heat from food digestion, however this may not be sufficient enough to lead to significant weight loss.
As with most products, caution must be practiced when using caffeine as high quantities may cause undesirable affects e.g. nervousness, insomnia, nausea, increased blood pressure and other problems.
