The answer

Waking at night from sleep and gasping for air with no history of breathing problems can have a few possible causes, anxiety/panic disorder, or sleep apnoea. So we would suggest seeing your GP soon to be assessed and discuss being referred for sleep studies to find out what is causing the issue as diagnosis will dictate treatment. Hopefully this will help you.
