Ankle injury

Hello, I took a knock on my ankle whilst playing sport 7 days ago. I can now walk on it a lot better than I could, however the muscles / tendons surrounding the ball of ankle and around of the foot still feel very sensitive. Is it worth getting it checked out? Or shall I wait for a while longer? Thanks

Ankle injuries, as you are aware can affect the bone, ligament and tendons and unfortunately can take up to a 6-8 weeks to recover depending on the type of injury you have sustained.

We usually recommend that you treat these injuries with rest, ice, compresses, analgesia and elevation. A form of analgesia that may help with the inflammation is Ibuprofen or Voltarol which can be applied in gel form to your ankle area. Please ensure that it is safe for you to take this or any other form of medication before commencing; check with your GP or pharmacist if unsure.

If the injury continues and swelling and difficulty walking still persist it would be advisable to get the ankle looked at and the trauma sustained assessed for tears and fractures.

We would recommend that you attend your GP or local Minor Injury Unit as they would be able to assess for type of injury and refer you for x-rays or MRI if necessary.

If you are still having difficulties you may feel that having physiotherapy or seeing an osteopath may also be of benefit.

We would encourage you to also do some basic exercises to improve the strength of your ankle once a break/ ligament injury has been excluded. Swimming or hydrotherapy may also be beneficial.

If you have a policy with AXA PPP you may be covered for physiotherapy and MSK team support and would suggest enquiring via your policy team.

We would suggest that you get the ankle looked at as soon as possible so that you can be given appropriate treatment and speed up your recovery.
