Dizzy and irritable

I have been suffering from strange bouts of feeling unwell. It happens once or twice a week and more often lately. I start to feel dizzy, disorientated and spacey, followed by irritability, shakey hands, anxiousness, heavy limbs, faitness, abdominal discomfort and sometimes diarrhoea. It can last up to 2 hours but I am left feeling spacey and tired for hours. I am very slim, underweight and am desperate to put on weight so eat as much as I can. I am worried as this is affecting my job.

There are several possible reasons why you might be experiencing these symptoms and a proper assessment and diagnosis from your doctor should be able to find out the exact cause. Low blood sugar may be a cause of this for example and can lead to the type of feelings you have been experiencing such as weakness dizziness and disorientation and tiredness with shaking. You mention not being able to put on weight and if low blood sugar is an issue for you this may help to explain why.

Equally anxiety states can cause shallow or ‘over-breathing’ otherwise known as hyperventilation which can also give rise to the types of problems you describe. Very commonly the sufferer isn’t aware of the breathing pattern until symptoms arise and this is usually managed by a variety of techniques including relaxation therapy and medication if indicated. Under the circumstances it would seem very prudent to see your Gp who will be able to perform a thorough assessment and diagnosis as to the exact cause and instigate any treatment that’s needed to get you back on the road to full health.
