I get a headache when I cough.

Why do I get a headache when I cough?

5 March 2015

Headaches associated with coughing are an uncommon finding. This type of headache is often called a Primary Cough Headache or Valsalva Manoeuvre Headache. A theory as to why this headache develops is raised intracranial pressure in the head; due to raised intra-abdominal or raised intra-thoracic pressure, causing an increase in central venous pressure.

Please speak to your General Practitioner for a clinical assessment and whether further investigations are required.
