Hi, My daughter has had a cough and cold for 9 days now, she missed first 2 days of school as had high temp with it and then has been at school but cough will not go away. Am I able to get her seen to see if antibiotics required?

The answer

A cold is a viral infection and this will normally resolve itself within 14 days. With some people this can persist a little longer. Commonly a cough can persist after a cold or flu for some weeks after the virus has resolved, and other than being an irritation there is no need for antibiotics. Antibiotics have very little effect on viral infections and are not normally prescribed for these infections.

Antibiotics would be considered if your daughter was coughing up yellowish or green secretions from her chest or yellowish or green secretions form her nose. Hopefully this will help you,
