Hi, 15 years ago I had a toxic infection in my inner ear and as a result got a gold/plastic stirrup implant in my left ear. 3 weeks ago while playing, my 2y old rammed a plastic syringe right into my left ear and I was bleeding. My ear was painful for a while, but got better. This morning after having a shower I carefully cleaned my ears with earbuds and noticed that there is something in my left ear that moves and I am wondering if it might be the stirrup that came loose. I would love to see a local specialist (I live in Cambridge CB1 2LJ). Thank you. Best, Tom

The answer

We do hope you saw your doctor at time of your injury as the bleeding and pain suggests injury within the ear, this could be to the ear canal or the eardrum itself and really should be assessed. You have not mentioned if your hearing has changed in the affected ear. This would indicate damage or movement to the stirrup implant. If there is something moving in your affected ear it does need to be checked by your doctor and an Ear Nose and Throat specialist, it may simply be a clot or scab from a healing wound at site of injury. But with your history we would suggest you discuss a referral to a specialist in your area and call your claims team to discuss referral process and which specialists you can see in your area as soon as possible. Hopefully this will help you,
