The answer

Laryngitis is normally caused by a respiratory tract viral infection. The vocal cords become inflamed resulting in the hoarse voice often associated with a common cold. At the same time the nose can become blocked which temporarily affects your ability to smell and taste - this should all return to normal within a week or two. The use of steam inhalation can help unblock the nose and sinuses which should speed up the process of recovery but be careful to prevent skin burns by taking care with boiling water.
