Hip pain after playing netball

After playing netball I now have pain in the front of my right hip when I walk. This is constant but is made worse as I walk at a normal stride when I put my left leg forward. Is there anything that can help relieve the pain, apart from paracetamol and ibuprofen which I have been taking?

The answer

You don’t mention if you play netball regularly or if, indeed, this is the beginning of the new season, but sometimes injuries occur when joints, muscles and soft tissues have not been used in a while or if they are over exerted.  This can result in inflammation within the joint which can be very painful.  If there has been no known trauma such as a fall, I would suggest resting the joint with the leg elevated on pillows/cushions.

Continue taking anti inflammatory medication according to the manufacturers instructions and consider applying a cool pack to the joint  for 10-15 minutes at a time to help reduce the inflammation. Over time your symptoms should settle down. However, should your symptoms persist or worsen, I would suggest you seek a medical opinion from your GP.
