Experiencing shooting pains in toes and heel

Hello, I have recently started going back to the gym. It has been a while since I have rode on a bike. anyway after a 15 minute moderate intensity exercise I am now experiencing shooting pains running from the toes to the heel in my foot. It comes on and off and i am wondering if you can help me on what the cause is?

Do you need to see a GP ASAP?

Would you like to speak with a doctor by video or phone at a time that suits you?

Our Doctor@Hand service, delivered by Doctor Care Anywhere, offers a doctor appointment by video or phone at a time that suits you.

The answer

Dear Luke

It is not unusual to experience pain when returning to exercise after a break. If this was your first episode cycling after some time then the foot pain may be related to the pressure you were putting on the foot while cycling. You have not mentioned if the pain persisted after the exercise. If this is the case then plantar fasciitis may be the cause of your pain, this is where the plantar fascia in the foot has become damaged and thickened.

This will have to be confirmed by your doctor, if confirmed you may need to take anti-inflamatory medication such as ibuprofen as well as pain medication, also physiotherapy can also help with stretching exercises, as can shoe inserts.

Hopefully this will help you.
