Excercise to improve bone health

What is the best kind of excercise to improve bone health? I would like to try a dance class - is this good and if so what sort of dance is best? I took ballet lessons many years ago and I love ballet but I am 69 so not sure if this is possible. Kind Regards Sue Goulden

Dear Sue,

There is no one specific exercise recommended for bone health, a combined approach is usually recommended. The best exercises thought to help build and maintain strong bones are weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercises. This can be moderate aerobic exercise such as walking, water aerobics, dancing and cycling.

Vigorous aerobic exercise, such as jogging, hiking, energetic dancing, tennis and aerobics. Muscle strengthening exercises can be yoga, gardening, resistance training, or exercises using weights or weight lifting, dancing can also come into this category.

We would suggest talking to your GP to rule out osteoporosis or any physical issues that may limit your choice of activity. You may also want to look into a personal trainer to assess your ability. If no issues then returning to ballet is very possible. Hopefully this will help you.
