D-dimer blood tests
I had two D-dimer blood tests. The first result was 1151. The second result was 1500. My ultra sound came back clear. The hospital hasn't been very helpful with information. Told that I would have a second scan in two weeks time. Any advice?
D-dimer is a specialized blood test designed to detect any pieces of blood clot that have been broken down and are loose in the bloodstream. This test is clinically recommended when there is a suspicious of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Pulmonary Embolism (PE) or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC).
There are 3 reference ranges and we believe the one you refer to yourself is measured in ng/ml. The normal range for a non-pregnant adult is less than 500. For pregnant women the normal range value can vary from 50-950 (first trimester), 320-1290 (second trimester) and 130-1700 (third trimester).
We don’t have enough information about you to comment on the significance of the D dimer test. We presume that you have been investigated for a risk of thrombotic disease, however the ultrasound was clear. There is a good practice to have a repeat scan in 10-14 days in such situations as long as your symptoms are improving and not getting worse.
We would suggest you speak with a nurse or a doctor at your practice as they will have your medical information available and be able to advise you accordingly.
