Hi, I am just getting over a cold and have sore crusty nostrils. What cream is safe to put up there to moisturise, without visiting the docs?

The answer

The simplest thing to use inside the nostrils if they have become sore and crusty is petroleum jelly e.g. Vaseline. This will moisturise and help to protect the sore areas inside your nostrils. You will only need to apply a tiny amount and you can re-apply it as many times as you need to throughout the day.

If your symptoms haven’t improved within about a week, then it would be a good idea to see your GP. Occasionally after a cold we can be left with a secondary bacterial infection which affects the skin lining the nostrils. The symptoms are similar to those that you are experiencing now. This can be cleared very easily by using an antibiotic nasal cream.
