Dear Sir or Madam, I have recently had a Cholesterol test which appears to be an average rather than a split of HDL and TC/HDL Ratio which I have previously had as a reading. Would you be able to suggest where I could go to have a further test to clarify my Cholesterol ? Thank you in advance for all your help. Await your advice. Kind regards Lee

The answer

Thank you for contacting us. Some doctors nowadays are steering away from the usual tests for Cholesterol, as performing the standard test that you are used to get (Full Lipid Profile), shows little benefit compared to just knowing the Total Cholesterol. The main benefit of this break down of the types of Cholesterol is as an indication of heart disease risk.

If you would like to get the test done, where you can see the full extent of the types of Cholesterol, you should contact your GP surgery and ask your doctor for a Full Lipid Profile Testing.

There are some private offers for this service but mostly they consist of a kit sent to your home so that you can take the blood. This is not advised by the NHS or by Heart UK, one of the lead charities for Cholesterol in the UK.
