My husband was hospitalised at Christmas with pneumonia...

My husband was hospitalised at Christmas with pneumonia and had subsequently been diagnosed with copd. As part of his recovery and treatment plan he has been advised to walk, if possible 30 minutes a day. We have commenced this however my husband is getting quite severe calf pain on walking any distance. If he rests he can go on again and once home this seems to pass. There is no swelling or redness, would you advise that he gets this checked.

The answer

Thank you for writing in to Ask the Expert. We are sorry to hear about your husband’s recent illness and COPD diagnosis and wish him well and a good recovery.

Recovering from pneumonia and living with COPD can take some time but exercise will certainly help him recover and strengthen him for the future.

You inform us that your husband is having severe calf pain when exercising Linda, and I think it would be a very good idea to get him reviewed by the GP in order to diagnose the cause of the calf pains and advise on treatment and management.

Wishing you both all the best,
