I have noticed that after I have a cup of coffee ( even instant) I feel very anxious with no reason. Can coffee provoke anxiety or this is just a coincidence? I have a problem with anxiety but on a days when I don't have coffee it doesn't last that long or not so severe and usually there is a reason for it like an argument or heavy conversation with a bank or phone company.
Drinking too much caffeine can make you feel more anxious than normal because caffeine can cause you to have disturbed sleep and also increases your heart rate. You may find you are less likely to be able to control your feeling of anxiety if you haven’t had a good nights sleep.
It may help to avoid drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and energy drinks to help reduce your anxiety levels. Although feelings of anxiety at certain times are normal, it’s important to make an appointment to see your GP if it is affecting your daily life or causing you distress. Your GP will ask you about your symptoms and discuss ways to help you manage these feelings, such as talking therapies and/or medications if appropriate.
