Hi, I've recently done two blood pressure test at a gym health MOT and the first reading showed 157/75 and the second 150/72. My pulse was 72. Should I see a doctor about this? It seems quite high.

The answer

Blood pressure is the term used to describe the strength with which the blood pushes on the side of your arteries as it’s pumped around the body. High blood pressure can put a strain on the arteries and organs, increasing the risk of developing serious problems such as stoke and heart attack. A blood pressure test is the only way to find out if your blood pressure is too high, because most people don’t have any obvious symptoms.

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and given as two figures. The top reading is the systolic pressure, the pressure when the heart pushes blood out. The bottom reading is the diastolic pressure, the pressure when the heart rest between beats.

Generally a normal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. A high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher.

If your blood pressure is found to be high, your GP can advise you about ways to control it; this may involve some life style changes or taking medication.
