Is porridge ok to eat as a breakfast when taking Adcal D3?
Is porridge ok to eat as a breakfast when taking Adcal D3? As I usually eat this and am now taking adcal but sometimes I feel a little sick about an hour or so later and wondered if the 2 are not compatable, thanks.

Adcal-D3 tablets contain calcium and vitamin D3, both essential for healthy bones and teeth, for people who require more calcium and vitamin D3 (to prevent osteoporosis) or are not getting sufficient amounts from their diet. Certain foods containing oxalic acid (spinach, rhubarb etc), phosphate or phytic acid (seeds, nuts, soy etc) may reduce the absorption of calcium.
Foods which are particularly high in oxalate include:
- Figs, Rhubarb, Beetroot, Spinach, Parsley, Bran Flakes, Wheat Bran, Nuts (all types), Strawberries, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Cranberries, Chocolate, Ovaltine, Cocoa. Aim to limit your intake to no more than one item from this list per day
To reduce oxalate absorption it would be advisable to avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluid, as close to 8 cups per day as possible. It is particularly important to keep well hydrated at night when urine is most concentrated. Drinking fluids before bedtime and once during the night is enough to prevent urine from becoming concentrated.
Foods to avoid include:
- High fat foods e.g. processed meat, pies, pastries, fried foods, cake, biscuits, creamy sauces, butter, spreads and oils
It would be advisable to limit your tea intake (including herbal and fruit tea) to 1 or 2 weak cups per day- less than 2-minute infusion and aim to always have milk with your tea and coffee.
Porridge oats are okay to eat with Adcal D3. Although Adcal D3 is generally well tolerated, the nausea may be a side effect. We suggest that if it worsens you speak to your doctor for further assessment.
