There can be several reasons why you might be experiencing the type of pain you have. As you have a history of upper limb problems it is possible that you are now experiencing some referred pain to your back and rib cage.
Other possible causes such as inflammation to the connective tissue or muscles could produce similar discomfort as can gall bladder problems which often refer pain to the right shoulder blade as well.
Exercises can certainly help some conditions but it might be useful to obtain a diagnosis of the problem first, this can provide a guide as to what exercises may be useful or whether a different treatment strategy may help. Your GP will be able to assist with this and can undertake a physical examination and possibly some simple blood tests as well, therefore it would be helpful to see him for an assessment in the first instance.
