My nose is clear all day, but as soon as I lie down it blocks up. Lying on either side it is the lower nostril that blocks.
Nasal congestion at night can impair our ability to get a good night’s sleep and we can often wake-up not feeling refreshed from our sleep. Nasal congestion is a very common complaint for General Physicians to have to manage.
There are a wide range of causes for nasal congestion, but often these are due to internal medical conditions such as allergies, polyps and viruses. In your case, if there is no environmental, structural or medical cause for your congestion; it would appear that the nasal membranes are being congested with blood due to pressure changes within the sinuses. When we lie down to sleep these pressure changes might give rise to the subjective sensation of ‘congestion’ in the nose. We would suggest a discussion with your General Practitioner as to the suitability of a referral onto an ear, nose and throat specialist if your symptoms persist.
