It’s a common belief that nothing can be done to prevent cancer, with our genes or just simple bad luck dealing the cards. Whilst inheriting a faulty gene such as the BRCA 1 gene – associated with breast and ovarian cancer amongst others – can mean a higher risk of cancer, scientific research is showing us that controllable factors such as our environment and lifestyle choices can cause cell damage which can in turn lead to cancer.
Lead the way
It’s estimated that more than 4 in 10 cancer cases could actually be prevented mostly through lifestyle changes*, which means there’s a very real opportunity to make a difference. Businesses are in a prime position to influence the lifestyle habits of their workforce, such as smoking and activity levels, with a view to reducing the risk of cancer – an outcome to benefit us all in the long term.
The value of health and wellbeing
By offering an engaging health and wellbeing programme organisations can encourage their workforce to eat well, exercise more and find ways to keep their minds and bodies healthy. The good news is the recent cultural shift towards wellbeing in the national zeitgeist means that many employees will be actively receptive towards help. But it doesn’t end there.
Being more direct with awareness and education driven activities on topics such as sun exposure can also make good business sense. With cancer a disease that is ignored by many through fear and lack of understanding there is a natural role for employers in helping us all be that bit more aware and active in our fight against the disease.
