What is the use of the BCG vaccine for babies?
The BCG vaccine is given in an attempt to prevent a baby developing tuberculosis (TB).
It is recommended for babies from the following groups :
- Those who have a family member who has suffered with TB in the last 5 years
- All babies born in areas where there are high levels of TB (more than 40 per 100,000)
- Babies who have a parent or grandparent who were born in a country with high levels of TB (more than 40 per 100,000)
