I have started to notice tartar build up.

I am a 59 year old male in reasonably good health. My teeth are in good condition and I visit the dentist every 6 months. Despite regular flossing and using a good quality electric toothbrush I have recently started to notice unsightly tartar build up on my lower front teeth. How do I prevent or remove this?

The answer

The only way to prevent tartar is by brushing regularly and correctly. It can occur anyway, even if you are meticulous about brushing your teeth. As it is hard to prevent completely, the dentist will often recommend a regular trip to see the hygienist (every few months) for a deep clean. Flossing daily will also help prevent it. Once the tartar has built up on the teeth it has to be removed by scaling and polishing them. The safest way to have this done is by a dentist or a hygienist.
