The Answer

The purpose of a pain clinic is to help people manage with chronic pain with the focus mainly on coping with the condition rather than looking for a cure. Those who have been referred to the pain clinic would normally have been fully investigated to establish or exclude other illnesses. Incurable pain syndromes are debilitating and are often result in depression so the aim is to treat the whole person rather than just the source of the pain. Chronic spinal problems such as back and neck pain are a large part of the pain clinic workload but a whole variety of other painful conditions are treated too. Treatments include a range of pain killing medications, spinal and other injections, physiotherapy, acupuncture and psychological therapies.
