What should I eat after my martial arts training?
What's the best thing I should eat after my martial arts training? The problem is, that it finishes at 9.30pm and if I eat too much I don't get a decent night's sleep.
Eating after a workout late at night can be tricky. In order to be able to get a good night’s sleep after a workout, we need to supply the body with foods that have a calming effect on the body, by dropping cortisol (your energy / stress hormone). If you drink a good quality (no artificial sweeteners) protein shake, which contains Taurine (an amino acid) and magnesium, with water immediately after your session, this will supply your body with tools to recover and calm down. Then, when you get home, eat a normal sized meal consisting of chicken or fish, as these are easier to digest, along with a decent portion of vegetables and a fistful of either sweet potato, brown rice, lentils or quinoa.
