The answer

The trouble with sticking rigidly with targets is that they have to be designed for an ‘average’ person. If you’re very physically active, you might need more than this calorie intake to maintain your weight. If you’re relatively inactive, you might put on weight even with these levels. As a rule of thumb, the more you can reduce your saturated fat intake the better. Swapping from full fat to skimmed or semi-skimmed dairy products; grilling rather than frying food; removing all visible fat from meat; cooking with oils like rape seed oil (or olive oil) rather than butter; and swapping butter on the table for spreads high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils will all help.
