The answer

As you are no doubt aware, gout is a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood, which can form crystals in joints, resulting in inflammation and intense pain. If required, medication plays a key role in lowering raised uric acid levels and managing gout. Key dietary guidance is to: keep to recommended alcohol limits and avoid binge drinking (beer and spirits carry a higher "gout risk"); enjoy a balanced diet and moderate high purine foods such as liver, offal, mackerel, sardines, mussels, red meat and yeast extracts; drink plenty of water and sugar-free drinks, and keep to one small glass of juice daily; include plenty of vitamin C-rich foods (vegetables/fruit) and two to three daily portions of low fat dairy foods. A few cups of coffee (caffeine-free or normal) daily may also help.
