The answer

Strong abdominal , back and pelvic core muscles will in the long run help prevent recurrence of your back pain but in the process of achieving this it is important that you protect your back from further injury. Pilates and other core strengthening exercise disciplines are a useful way to gain strength without needing to do the potentially harmful repetitive movement exercises such as conventional sit-ups, stomach crunches and  back/side extensions. Not every exercise will suit each individual so it would be useful to have a sports physiotherapist or qualified Pilates instructor design a set of personalised exercises for you. The key is to perform the exercises correctly in a slow controlled manner and this will also give the best strength gains too.
