The answer

I’m sorry to hear about your knee problems. Any joint instability will lead to an increased chance of osteoarthritis (wear and tear) in that joint because the cartilage, the lubricating surface of the joint, becomes worn away. That is almost certainly what has happened to you. It may eventually mean that you have to have the knee(s) replaced but ask your specialist if you may be a candidate for any of the newly developed cartilage-regenerating techniques which are becoming increasingly available in certain cases.
