The answer

Hip pain is normally felt in the groin and down the thigh towards the knee. If the pain is in the buttock area or on the side of the hip then this is unlikely to be hip joint pain and more likely to be arising from the back or other structures around the pelvis. The reason that one hip might wear quicker than the other is due to the fact that bio-mechanically we are not completely symmetrical so that left and right sides can move slightly differently. Previous one-sided injuries to the knee, ankle or foot, back or hip itself can also lead to one hip wearing out faster as a result of imperfect movement to protect the other damaged areas.
