Top 10 tips for work-life balance

Meeting the demands of work while enjoying life at home with your family and friends can be hard to balance. In fact, recent research revealed 8 out of 10 (82%) working parents find it difficult to deal with ‘life admin’ - those unavoidable tasks and events that interrupt our everyday lives - outside of their normal working hours. Our psychological health expert, Eugene Farrell, has come-up with some practical steps to help you manage that all important work-life balance.

Top ten work-life balance tips for employees

  1. Schedule your work into time slots, as you would with meeting appointments and work to that time.
  2. Take regular breaks, get up every hour – even if it’s just a walk to get a drink of water.
  3. Have a proper lunch break of at least 30 minutes away from your desk where you can switch off from work for a while.
  4. Take all of your annual leave each year, with a least one full week.
  5. Use an out of office message and delegate work when you’re away, so that you don’t have to check emails until you return.
  6. Turn off email notification and check mail at scheduled times in the working day – not in the evening and never before going to sleep.
  7. Don’t be afraid to say no to taking on more work if you don’t think you’ll achieve it. If something’s a must, chat to your manager about delaying something else.
  8. Look after yourself. Get a good night’s sleep, eat healthily, exercise; it will help keep you focussed.
  9. If you feel work is taking over then talk to your manager.
  10. Focus on the quality of your work, rather than quantity.

Most importantly, own your work and your time – don’t let it own you!
