The answer

I’m assuming you’re talking about your coronary arteries – the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. The main reason for these becoming blocked is a build-up of fatty plaque due to raised cholesterol levels. There is some evidence that really aggressive medical treatment to lower your cholesterol may partly reverse this build-up. However, I’m afraid that with up to 80% of the inside of any part of a coronary artery blocked, it’s likely that surgery is going to be the only really effective treatment. You will also, of course, need careful monitoring and treatment to keep your cholesterol and blood pressure under control in the future to stop other arteries suffering a similar fate.
