The answer

You are correct in thinking that you do need to take extra special care of yourself to keep your heart healthy. This can be helped by 1)Stop smoking. 2) Healthy eating - eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Eat less meat. Do not add salt to your cooking. Avoid junk foods, ready-made meals and takeaways. 3)Exercise regularly - aim to do 2.5 hours per week of moderate intensity exercise e.g. fast walk or cycling. 4) Lose weight if you are overweight or obese. Aim for a normal BMI (body mass index). 5) Drink less alcohol. Do not exceed the recommended daily limits. 6)Take your prescribed medications every day - there are some medications that have been proven to help you live longer. An example is a statin type drug, which lowers cholesterol. 7) See your doctor or practice nurse regularly for blood pressure checks. You will need to be checked for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol on a regular basis. You will also need to have blood tests to make sure everything in under good control.
