I sometimes experience stomach spasms.

Tags: pilates , pregnancy

I sometimes experience stomach spasms, uncomfortable muscle contraction, a tightening knotted feeling on my left hand side lower tummy and the sensation can spread to the centre of my tummy. Usually experienced when moving and when sitting and stretching in pilates. A sudden uncomfortable feeling like cramp and I have to stop what I am doing. I do not know whether this is cause for concern?

The answer

I am not exactly sure of the diagnosis here but any new abdominal pains should really be checked out by your doctor. Especially if you are an older person and the pains have been going on for more than a couple of weeks. Your doctor will want to ask you for some more information, such as if you have had a recent change in your bowel habits (new diarrhoea, constipation or blood in your motions). These symptoms warrant an examination of your tummy at the very least. It may turn out to be nothing but better to get it checked out to be sure.

If you are a young woman any new lower tummy pains could be related to pregnancy, so always consider a pregnancy test if you fall into that category.
