Healthcare cover for you and your family

Guide to health insurance

When is private health insurance my best option?

To avoid NHS waiting lists, choose private health (medical) insurance

Private health insurance could be your best option for a disease, illness or injury that is likely to respond quickly to prompt treatment. For example, if you suffer a leg injury while playing sport and go to see your GP about it, he or she may refer you to a physiotherapist. But perhaps in your area, the NHS waiting list for physiotherapy treatment is very long. In this case, it makes sense to go private so that you will start to receive treatment within a much shorter period of time.

When money is an issue, a cash plan can help

If money's a little tight, a cash plan can help with everyday healthcare costs. It won't usually cover you for hospital stays, but instead offers you money for things like going to the dentist, optician or physiotherapist. Think of it as a helping hand in times of need.

If you can afford a bit more each month, most insurers offer low-cost private medical insurance plans offering good (but not totally comprehensive) cover. Remember, it makes sense to contribute as much as you can to your own and your family's health.

In an emergency, rely on the NHS

Accidents and emergencies are best treated by the NHS. They have the resources and expertise to cope well in such circumstances. For example, if you are involved in a serious accident and need treatment immediately, an ambulance will take you to the accident and emergency ward of the nearest hospital. Your injuries will be dealt with straight away and you will be kept in a public ward.
